UAH College of Nursing welcomes Distinguished Speaker Dr. Barbara Sattler, Professor of Public Health University of San Francisco

Dr. Barbara Sattler, guest speaker for the UAH College of Nursing Distinguished Speaker Series will give a public talk, and conduct a nursing workshop.

Internationally recognized nursing professor and environmental health expert, Dr. Barbara Sattler will be the guest speaker for The University of Alabama in Huntsville's (UAH) Distinguished Speaker Series Oct. 30-31.

Her visit is sponsored by the UAH College of Nursing. During Sattler's visit to the UAH campus she will give a public talk, and conduct a nursing workshop.

The public talk "Our Environment and Our Health: How Are They Connected?" will be presented at 5:30 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 30, in the College of Nursing Auditorium (1610 Ben Graves Drive). Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public; reservations are strongly encouraged. Please email your name and affiliation to: Azita.Amiri@uah.edu. Nurses will receive two (2) CEU contact hours for attending the workshop.

On Saturday, Oct. 31, Sattler will conduct a professional seminar "Environmental Health and Nursing Workshop," from 8:30 a.m., to 3:30 p.m., in the College of Nursing Auditorium (1610 Ben Graves Drive). The cost for the workshop (faculty and nurses) is $40. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for this event. The conference is free to attend for all college and university students with current identification. Nurses will receive six (6) CEU contact hours for attending the professional seminar.

Dr. Barbara Sattler (RN, DrPH, FAAN) is a Professor of Public Health at The University of San Francisco, and a nurse leader in the area of environmental health, including issues related to climate change. She helped establish the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) and serves as board member for the organization.

For 23 years, Sattler served as the Director of the Environmental Health Center at The University of Maryland School of Nursing.

She is on the Environmental Health Committee of the American Association of Colleges of Nurses and a member of the Environmental Health Expert Panel for the American Academy of Nurses. Sattler has secured research grants from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). She has worked extensively with communities that have been challenged by environmental problems including sites where gas, and oil spills, and other extensive soil-based exposures have occurred.

A staunch opponent of fracking, Sattler serves as an active member of the Fracking Committee of the ANHE. Fracking is a controversial high-pressure drilling technique used for extracting oil or natural gas from deep underground. Sattler co-authored the new Energy Resolution passed by the American Nurses Association that calls for a nation-wide moratorium on all new fracking permits and encourages nurses' engagement in energy policy discourse and advocacy.

Sattler has published numerous journal articles and book chapters including "Core Curriculum for Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing," (AAOHN Journal), and "The Greening of a Major Medical Center," (The American Journal of Nursing).

She has been an advisor to the EPA's Office of Child Health Protection and the National Library of Medicine for informational needs of health professionals on environmental health. Sattler's awards and honors include the Charlotte Brody Award for Lifetime Contributions to Environmental Health Nursing and National Champions for Change Award. She was inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Public Health Society, Alpha Chapter of Johns Hopkins, and in 2013 she was named to the Transition US Board. Transition US is a nonprofit organization that seeks to build community resilience in the face of such challenges as peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis.

Sattler holds a Diploma in Nursing from the Pilgrim State Hospital School of Nursing (Brentwood, New York), a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Baltimore (Maryland), a Master's degree and PhD in Public Health from The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

The UAH workshop is co-sponsored by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Beta Phi Chapter and the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments.
