Biography

Daniel Cobb has developed a robust skillset in implementing model-based systems engineering (MBSE) concepts across a diverse array of military defense and weapon projects, both as a civil servant and defense contractor. During his tenure in the civil service, he contributed to hardware design and led project management efforts in the Integrated Air and Missile Defense Program. In this role, he spearheaded efforts to revamp a shelter design that fell short of stakeholder requirements, gaining valuable insights into the critical role of systems engineering and architecture.

After completing a Master’s at the Naval Postgraduate School, specializing in MBSE, Daniel became the lead systems engineer (SE) in a lab dedicated to the application of MBSE techniques across defense programs at various lifecycle stages and Acquisition Category (ACAT) levels. After leaving the civil service, Daniel served as lead MBSE or lead SE on projects supporting organizations such as the Missile Defense Agency, the Air Force Research Lab, and NASA. Most recently, Daniel led the systems engineering execution for the AFRL Mayhem Hypersonic Vehicle to a successful System Requirements Review (SRR).

Throughout his career, Daniel has developed methodologies for applying the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) on defense programs that capture the government reference viewpoint and potential implementations. These methodologies serve as an alternative to DoDAF/UPDM/UAF, allowing users to maximize the extensibility of the language. Motivated by his commitment to applying SE best practices, Daniel tailors each approach to fit the problem. He believes in meeting domain engineers “halfway” to enforce a rigid solution framework rather than a rigid modeling process, allowing users to focus on the data that impacts decisions and how it can be traced through the digital engineering ecosystem.
