a student meeting with one of UAH's licensed counselors

Important information for the upcoming semester:

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the office will be closed to in-person appointments.  All sessions will be held via Zoom on the TAO platform.  In your appointment reminders either via text or email, there will be a link to complete the CCAPS34 form, this must be completed prior to every individual appointment.  We will send you the ZOOM link for your session the day prior to your scheduled appointment via emailed appointment reminder - if your appointment falls on a Monday, you will receive your appointment reminder the Friday before. We recommend that you sign on to the link at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment time.  For any technical issues, please call the office or email us immediately.  For more information regarding individual counseling sessions during COVID-19 restrictions, please click here or FAQ.

In individual counseling, you have the full attention of one of our counselors in a one-on-one atmosphere of understanding, warmth, and insight. Our counselors can help you in a variety of ways because they are excellent sounding-boards, compassionate listeners, and skillful experts in problems of living. They offer an array of therapeutic interventions such as self-expression activities and traditional therapies.  Limited to 8 sessions per semester; $15 Wellness Fee per visit.

In order to benefit fully from counseling, the following recommendations are offered:

  • Attend scheduled sessions.
  • Be specific about the concerns that led to your decision to seek counseling.
  • Establish with your counselor desired goals and outcomes to be achieved in counseling.
  • Discuss your progress with your counselor as you go along, and modify your goals if necessary.
  • Participate actively, and be as open and honest as possible.
  • Be prepared for your sessions.
  • Tell your counselor if you don't think you're being helped.

Successful counseling is a joint process requiring your motivation and active involvement. The more actively involved you are; the more effective counseling will be for you.

Understanding a situation before it reaches the urgent stage can make a big difference. We encourage you to come in, even if you are not sure that counseling is what you need. With a counselor's help, you can discuss alternatives and decide the best way to proceed. For many students, dealing effectively with emotional and social issues improves their success with academic work. The Counseling Center is a place for help with any psychological or emotional problem or need.
