Gary P. Zank, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Space Science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Director of the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research, has been recognized with the prestigious Champion Award from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. The honor was presented at the organization’s 94th South Eastern Region Conference Public Meeting on April 30, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Champion Award is reserved for individuals who exemplify Alpha Kappa Alpha’s core values through exceptional leadership and sustained community service. Zank was selected for his longstanding commitment to mentorship, education, and community engagement, particularly through his work supporting student interns at CSPAR, where he helps cultivate the next generation of scientists and leaders.
Veronica Belser, CSPAR Research Administrator and a 45-year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, nominated Zank for the award. The honor was presented by Tracey Morant Adams, South Eastern Regional Director, alongside Danette Anthony Reed, International President and CEO. In her remarks, Adams emphasized the significance of recognizing individuals whose contributions uplift communities and reflect the organization’s global service mission.
This year’s conference carried the theme “Rooted in Community and Soaring in Service,” highlighting Alpha Kappa Alpha’s continued commitment to impactful initiatives across its network of more than 1,120 chapters in 15 countries and territories. With over 390,000 initiated members, the sorority has marked 118 years of dedicated service to communities worldwide.
The 2026 regional conference drew more than 6,400 attendees, including undergraduate and graduate members, inclusive of longtime “Diamond” members with over 75 years of service, elected officials, and community leaders. The large and diverse audience underscored the significance of the recognition.
In accepting the award, Zank expressed gratitude for the honor, noting the value of collaboration with Alpha Kappa Alpha students through CSPAR’s summer programs. He highlighted the enthusiasm and talent these students bring, as well as the importance of providing hands-on scientific experience.
