Hong Guo, a graduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) was recently awarded a 2017 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE.)
The society awarded $298,000 in education scholarships to more than 80 outstanding SPIE. student members, based on their potential contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award‐winning applicants were evaluated, selected and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee.
Hong Guo is completing his PhD program at UAH and works as a graduate research assistant in the Nanophotonics and Plasmonics Laboratory led by Dr. Junpeng Guo, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Optics at the university.
Hong Guo's research area also includes nanostructure plasmonics, photonics, and metamaterials, nano structure design and fabrication, and optical testing. Before Hong Guo began research work as a graduate student, he served as a skilled manager working on turnkey projects for Huawei Technologies, a leading global ICT solutions provider with offices located in Africa, China Venezuela and New Zealand. He speaks four languages English, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish.
Two years ago, HongGuo was one of six UAH graduate students who received prestigious awards from the Alabama Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (ALEPSCoR alepscor.org/grsp/) Graduate Research Scholars Program (GRSP). He wrote a proposal for external research funding in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) discipline.
Hong Guo earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Sichuan University ( Sichuan Sheng, China), and a Master of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UAH. He is expected to be awarded a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering soon.
SPIE. is the international society for optics and photonics, an educational not‐for‐profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light‐based science, engineering, and technology.
