UAH Karen Ames Memorial Lecture Series features renowned mathematician Edriss S. Titi

Noted Professor of Mathematics Dr. Edriss S. Titi, will be the keynote speaker for UAH Karen Ames Memorial Lecture Series on Friday, Feb. 12.

Edriss S. Titi, a Professor of Mathematics at The Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, will be the keynote speaker for The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Dr. Karen Ames Memorial Lecture Series on Friday, Feb. 12.

Dr. Titi will give the presentation "Continuous Data Assimilation for Weather and Climate Models," at 3 p.m., in the UAH Shelby Center for Science and Technology room 301. The talk is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at 2:30 p.m.

Dr. Edriss S. Titi is Professor of Mathematics at The Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, and Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The University of California-Irvine. A renowned applied mathematician with broad interests in nonlinear science and scientific computation, specializing in the mathematical study of problems from fluid dynamics, nonlinear partial differential equations, and in a dynamical systems approach to turbulence.

He has received numerous awards throughout his career. Titi is a recipient of the highly prestigious The Humboldt Prize, an international award given to renowned scientists and scholars. Presented by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany, recipients receive $60,000 and an invitation to conduct research with German colleagues. While in Germany Titi focused on theoretical and practical advances in the understanding and simulation of atmosphere and ocean dynamics.

Dr. Karen Ames was a highly respected professor of Mathematical Sciences at UAH for 16 years. She died Sept. 28, 2006. Ames graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University and earned a PhD in mathematics from Cornell University.

During the 1980s Ames taught at Rice University, The University of Texas-Austin and at Iowa State University. She had more than 50 published articles and co-authored Non-Standard and Improperly Posed Problems. She was the second woman to attain the Emmy Noether Lectureship at Bryn Mawr College (1998-99).

"In addition to being an outstanding teacher, researcher, and role model to female students pursuing mathematics degrees, Karen Ames was a kind and giving person and a dedicated friend," said long-time friend Tamara Lang, Senior Staff Assistant in the UAH Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Ames' interest in attracting young women to the field of mathematics, led family members to establish the Dr. Karen Ames Fellowship for Women in Mathematics at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The university also established The Dr. Karen Ames Lecture Series on Applied Mathematics.
