PRC Mentoring Lunch - Feb 22, 2019

The February 2019 PRC Student Mentoring Lunch was located at the Johnson Research Center. Our guest speaker for the lunch was Dr. Gabe Xu, who spoke about Plasma-assisted combustion (PAC) and plasma-assisted ignition (PAI) use an electromagnetic field to influence a flame or combustion reaction. The fact that an electric field can affect a flame has been known since 1899. PAC comes in two forms: passive assistance using external EM fields and the naturally generated flame ions, and active assistance using plasma discharges to generate reactive species. PAC has been shown to increase flammability limits, improve flame stability and flame holding, decrease auto-ignition time, increase flame blow-off velocity, and reduce select emissions. This talk will cover some of the PAC and PAI research that has been done at the UAH Propulsion Research Center and future plans.
