Written by: Oschelle Lopez July 23, 2014 Eight REU students currently working at CSPAR summer of 2014, volunteered with Ms. Samaiyah Farid, Research Scientist, this weekend at the Fayetteville Library Science Week. There were participants with ages ranging from 2 to 12. They discussed magnetism, electricity, spectroscopy, and science in general. The participants were given a compass, 2 bar magnets, iron fillings, copper wire, battery, diffraction grating glasses, a NASA sticker, and a flier about the Hinode X-Ray Telescope to take home. The participants built and experimented with an electromagnet and a monopolar motor. They also experimented with bar magnets, iron fillings, and their effect on a compass. The event lasted around an hour and a half.
