ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

UAH is a recognized leader in space research, and the Department of Space Science was created to develop a corresponding academic program with a national ranking.


Our faculty and researchers study cosmic plasmas and radiation and how they interact with each other from microscopic to galactic scales. In fact, over 99% of the visible universe is in a plasma state. We employ cutting edge observational and modeling techniques to learn about this most abundant, yet still enigmatic, form of matter.

The Department is a graduate program exclusively, offering an MS or PhD degree in Space Science, although we also teach an undergraduate class in space science for the UAH Honors College. Our students develop a broad spectrum of skills, including computational science, data analysis, analytic theory, and even space instrumentation development. Our graduates work at
NASA centers, national labs, universities in the US and abroad and in private industry.

The department enjoys close collaborations with the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research (CSPAR) and with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. We run several summer schools and an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) program.


Created in September 2013, the Department of Space Science is the newest department in the College of Science at UAH.

JOB DESCRIPTION/REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Space Science is seeking an outstanding scientist and teacher to fill a tenure-track assistant professor position in the field of heliophysics. This is the last of three positions that were to be filled over three years, all of which are expected to support and complement a National Science Foundation Established Program in Support of Competitive Research
(EPSCoR) grant in low-temperature plasma physics. Within the general field of LTP science, areas of particular interest to the Department include solar and interplanetary physics, especially research that supports the new Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, and IMAP missions in which the Department is engaged, particularly in the areas of turbulence and particle transport and energization (including pickup ion physics), and related space weather research. The ideal
candidate will complement existing strengths within the Department while expanding significantly research capabilities and competencies. We are seeking someone who uses observations, theory, and/or modeling to address these areas of interest. The successful candidate will teach graduate-level courses primarily, will develop at least two new advanced graduate level courses reflecting their research expertise, and will mentor graduate students pursuing MS and PhD degrees and undergraduate students in summer programs. It is expected that the successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent degree in a field appropriate to the job description above and will have and pursue independent research funding.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant III

 

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant III to support their "Self-Organization of Plasma-Material Interfaces" project. The incumbent will help achieve the goals of the project and will assist with research as proposed.

 

The Postdoctoral Research Assistant will work with the Principal Investigators for the project to conduct experimental research on plasma interactions with surfaces and magnetic fields.

 

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Engineering, Space Science or Physics with 2 - 2 1/2 years of full-time verifiable work experience (to include 1 year of experience in experimental research and data analysis). Experience with lasers and plasma experiments is preferred.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant III – Center for Space Plasma & Aeronomic Research

 

The University of Alabama in Huntsville is accepting applications for 2 regular full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant positions to work in the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research for approximately two years with the potential for renewal. The position provides support for research initiatives using a wide range of observational tools, including ground-based facilities such as all-sky imagers, magnetometers, SuperDARN, and ISR, low-altitude satellites such as DMSP and SWARM, and magnetospheric missions such as THEMIS and MMS in the general area of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.  The salary range for this position is approximately $52,216 - $55,000.

 

Qualifications

 

  • PhD in Space Science or Physics is required
  • 2 – 2 ½ years of full-time verifiable work experience
  • Experience in analyzing ground-based or space-borne data is highly desired
  • Proficiency in IDL is desired

Postdoctoral Research Assistant III - Center for Space Plasma & Aeronomic Research
