The College of Business at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this week for their brand-new finance lab, which is located on the first floor of the Business Administration Building and includes several standing stations and monitors displaying real-time stock market data.

"Our new finance lab reflects each aspect of our mission, and is especially important in helping us launch the careers of our students," says Dr. Jason Greene, dean of the College. "It will allow them to apply what they learn in the classroom and get hands-on experience with the subject matter, which is powerful."

Under the direction of the College’s finance faculty, Dr. John Burnett, Dr. Tingting Que, and Dr. Xuejing Xing, the students will use the lab’s technology to conduct fundamental research about the economy, industries, and companies.

The College’s finance lab will give students hands-on experience, including the opportunity to buy real stocks and bonds for three investment funds.

"They will think critically about the information, discerning what is relevant and important to their objective, and they will develop and implement investment strategies," says Dr. Greene. "They will also work independently and in teams to analyze the information to develop investment ideas – choosing between riskier versus safer assets, stocks versus bonds, and specific names among the stocks or bonds."

Perhaps most significantly, he continues, they will be able to express their ideas about and interest in the market by buying real stocks and bonds with real money. "This fall semester, UAH students will manage a total of more than $1 million in market investments through the TVA Investment Challenge, the Durkee Fund, and the Chan Investment Fund," he says. "And that’s not just real money. That’s REAL money."
