February 23, 2021 Staff Senate Announcements: February 17 Meeting Guest Speaker Steven Anderson, the UAH Interim Police Chief, joined the Staff Senate Meeting today. He discussed the goals, objectives and changes going on with-in our campus police department. Updating policies and procedures Outlining traffic stops Use of force policy Equipment upgrades such as cameras on uniforms and in-car video Managing day-to-day functions with-in police department Timeline for hiring of new police chief: the job is posted from Jan 12- Feb 16. There are 80 applicants. Candidates will be narrowed down and a select few invited to campus for “town hall” type question and answer session during the week of April 5-9. A new chief will be appointed sometime during the week of April 19-23. Todd Barre thanked Chief Anderson for his work during this interim session. Choose the year of the W-2 form you wish to view and click Display Research The current NASA-UAH Cooperative agreement has been extended through March 31, 2022, at which time NASA and UAH will employ a new cooperative agreement. Dr. Jerome Baudry performed research with Hewlett Packard Enterprises (with their Cray supercomputer) to identify 125 naturally occurring compounds that show promise as treatments for COVID-19 Dr. Eric Mendenhall performed research with the HudsonAlpha Institute to identify 208 proteins responsible for orchestrating the regulation genes in the human genome. Dr. Haihong Che at CSPAR used NASA supercomputers to propose a new mechanism to explain how electrons work in solar flares. Communications Refined and updated the SS survey Employee Benefits and Development Briefly discussed four major research topics Old Business – no major updates Health Insurance Premium Paid Parental Leave Proposal to allow telework on regular basis Employee Tuition Assistance New Business/Discussions Made final approval of the new Benefits questions for the Staff Senate survey – sent to Communications and Executive Committees Considered UAH Staff Handbook verbiage concerning time-off for voting The Benefits Committee compared the UAH Staff Handbook to the current Alabama State Laws (about time-off for voting) The consensus of the Benefits Committee is that the UAH Staff Handbook policy offers sufficient coverage as-is, even more generous than current AL state law Executive Committee – Christopher Began preliminary discussions on new mission/vision for the Staff Senate CDMT meet to discuss dissemination of impending vaccines to be received by the university. Service and Outreach - Breanna/Brooke Event updates Christy - Contacted legal department at UA, no paypal account is allowed. They recommended we do a banner account through advancement. It would be a lot of setup. We would need to follow the state guidelines, which would change with non-profits/charities and the signer of the account would have to change with the committee every year. *For next year’s committee, start with making a plan on what charities to work with so they can begin setting up finances.
