The idea of studying abroad can initially be financially daunting. Too often, however, students simply dismiss the idea of studying abroad because they believe it will cost too much money or that they will not be able to afford it. First, studying abroad may not cost as much as you think! In most cases, financial aid is available to help with costs, and in some cases, scholarships may also be available. Visit Scholarships and Fellowships for more information.

Second, when you consider the idea of studying abroad, it is important to think of studying abroad as an investment in yourself and your future. Thinking about studying abroad as an investment will help you consider how studying abroad will become an important part of your educational journey at UAH and help you prepare for your future after you complete your studies here. As you proceed in your thinking, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Why do you want to study abroad? What are you main goals for studying abroad?
  2. Where do you want to study abroad and why?
  3. How do you think studying abroad will help you achieve your personal and career goals?

Third, now that you have thought about why and where you want to study abroad, take time to consider the financial dimensions involved in pursuing your objectives.

  1. Examine the estimated costs for the program. Consider how these expenses compare to what you pay for tuition and fees and room and board at UAH. The difference may not be as great as you think!
  2. Begin to think about how you can finance your study abroad program. Will you be able to work to save money for the experience? Will you need to check with the Office of Financial Aid here at UAH to determine how much aid you could be eligible for? Can you approach family, friends, and others for financial support? In short, develop a plan for how you think you can proceed with financing your study abroad opportunity.
  3. When you apply for a study abroad program, you will receive detailed financial information about costs and payment deadlines. Please review these carefully. If you are seeking financial aid, please take this financial information to the Office of Financial Aid. This information will be used to determine your aid eligibility.
