Written by: Sharla Horton September 27, 2024 Maialen Mera, a senior at UAH, received a $1,500 scholarship from the International Cost Estimating and Analysis Association Maialen Mera, a senior mathematical sciences major at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) who is preparing to graduate in May 2025, received a $1,500 scholarship from the International Cost Estimating and Analysis Association. “I found out about the scholarship through an email from the math department,” says Mera. “They mentioned that ICEAA was coming to give a talk, and during that presentation, they announced the scholarship.” The International Cost Estimating and Analysis Association (ICEAA) is a nonprofit organization whose primary mission supports the development of its members in cost estimation, cost analysis and related disciplines. There are multiple global chapters, and locally, an Alabama Chapter of the organization. Mera, a first-generation international student from San Sebastian, Spain with roots in Colombia, is also Captain of UAH Women’s Soccer Team. She has earned a spot on the Gulf South Conference Academic Honor Roll multiple years, and has had several athletic awards. While attending UAH as a full-time student and athlete, Mera is also a math tutor at the Student Success Center, an experience that she has found very enriching throughout her academic career. “One of the best parts of being a math tutor is witnessing what we call the 'Aha moment' at the SSC,” she says. “It’s that moment when something finally clicks for the student, and they understand a concept they've been struggling with. It’s really rewarding to help guide them to that point.” When asked how she discovered UAH, a college located some 4,300 miles away from her home, she said it was through her sports agency. However, she stresses that soccer wasn’t her main goal in selecting the university. “My top priority was finding an academically excellent university. I chose UAH because it offers strong academics and also allows me to continue playing soccer.” Nonetheless, Mera says collegiate soccer has been an awesome experience for her, both on and off the field. “I've learned a lot during my 4 years on the soccer team. Now that I’m heading into my last season as a senior and captain, I’m just trying to enjoy every moment, be a good role model for the freshmen, and help our program get better.” Mera leverages her leadership role to unite and strengthen the team. “The bond we have is amazing, and my teammates really feel like family. I wouldn't be the same without them,” she says. While some students may find a mathematics degree challenging, Mera stresses that those interested in math shouldn’t worry about it being too difficult. “My best advice is to believe in themselves and their abilities—don’t doubt what they can achieve. [Students] just need to put in the effort and ask for help when needed—there are plenty of resources out there, like friends, professors, and the SSC.” Dr. Toka Diagana, Chair of the UAH Department of Mathematical Sciences, says students who are considering a degree in mathematics should prepare themselves for a stimulating curriculum. “With personalized mentorship from our dedicated faculty, you will explore basic topics such as calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, probability, and statistics, all while building a strong foundation in mathematics for your future success.” Diagana added that a mathematics degree from UAH enhances analytical and problem-solving skills, which are highly sought after in a wide range of industries. “A mathematics degree provides the practical expertise and research experience needed to excel, whether you are aiming for graduate studies or entering the professional world.”“Scholarships like that of ICEAA play a crucial role in enhancing the academic and professional development of UAH students. This support not only enriches their educational experience but also equips them with valuable skills and connections within the mathematical community.” Mera says she has enjoyed her time at UAH. “[My] background drives me to work hard and make the most of every opportunity. I love my family, and my mom is the person I look up to the most—my goal in life is to give her the life she deserves.”“If someone is thinking about majoring in math, it’s probably because they’re good at it or they really enjoy it, and either reason is totally valid and enough!”
