My research focus prior to retirement in May 2016 was on studies of DNA binding proteins from extreme thermophiles as model systems for elucidating the binding energetics of key proteins in human biochemistry. Our work was funded by the National Institutes of Health for nearly 30 years.

My research has now moved from Fourier analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance signals to analysis of the sound of the acoustic piano with the goal of achieving the perfect tune. This includes investigations of the effect of string inharmonicities on piano tuning, as well as voicing of the hammers and regulation of the action.
