Mariama Feaster's ('23) journey through meteorology is a story of passion, persistence, and purpose. As an alumna of the College of Science at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), a part of the University of Alabama System, she seeks to inspire other prospective meteorologists, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Her story emphasizes the importance of representation in the field and the significance of seizing opportunities to achieve one's aspirations. As we celebrate Black History Month, her journey exemplifies the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of pursuing one's dreams.
From Lithonia, Georgia, Ms. Feaster's passion for meteorology started when she was seven when she discovered a book detailing the complexities of tornadoes. Following her fascination with meteorology, she wanted to further immerse herself in the subject, leading her to contemplate her college journey, seeking an institution where she could expand her horizons and delve deeper into atmospheric sciences.
Consequently, Ms. Feaster opted for her Bachelor's at Jackson State University (JSU), drawn not only by its academic programs but also by the opportunity to be part of a community where she could find peers who shared her experiences and background. Her parents have urged her to get the best education and highlighted the advantages of attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
While at Jackson State University, Ms. Feaster actively engaged in internships and presented her research at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) conference, fostering a strong sense of community within the meteorological field. At AMS, she met faculty from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), where she had applied for her master's degree. Dr. Kevin Knupp, an Atmospheric and Earth Science professor, played a crucial role in guiding her toward opportunities at UAH, reinforcing her decision to pursue her academic journey there.
During her time at UAH, aside from her research efforts, Ms. Feaster participated in various meteorological activities and societies, such as UPSTORM and the UAH AMS/NWA Student Chapter, contributing to her holistic engagement with the field.
As a Meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS), currently stationed at the NWS Pendleton in Pendleton, Oregon, she trains to create long-term and short-term forecasts. She is also learning how to use deterministic weather models for analysis to apply to the weather grids. She is also actively engaged in community outreach initiatives, leveraging platforms such as AMS conferences and high school symposiums to inspire aspiring meteorologists and foster diversity within the field.
Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Feaster attributes much of her success to her family's determined support and mentors, especially her parents, whose encouragement pushed her forward even in the most challenging times.
Ms. Feaster aspires to inspire other students as she progresses in her journey. Reflecting on her experiences, she offers advice to those following a similar path: Keep an open mind, persevere through challenges with the support of loved ones, and prioritize enjoyment in your academic journey. These principles can make navigating college more fulfilling and manageable.
