Written by: Justin Hargrave July 24, 2025 Two faculty members from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) College of Nursing attended on behalf of their research group (Dr. Misty Smith, Dr. Shikha Modi, Dr. Michele Kane, and Dr. Preston Miller) to present their findings at the Alabama League of Nursing (ALN) Conference, offering valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities surrounding the promotion and tenure process for nursing faculty. Their study explored the obstacles faculty encounter in their academic careers and identified key strategies that institutions can implement to support faculty advancement. Navigating the Path to Tenure in Nursing Academia For nurse educators, the journey toward tenure is both demanding and complex. Faculty members are expected to balance rigorous teaching responsibilities, engage in research, publish scholarly work, and contribute to service roles within the university and the broader nursing community. However, unclear tenure expectations and the pressure to meet multiple academic demands often create significant challenges, particularly for early-career faculty. The research presented at ALN highlighted key barriers that can hinder faculty progression. Heavy workloads, difficulties in maintaining a work-life balance, a lack of institutional support, and limited access to resources were identified as major challenges. Additionally, the prevailing “publish or perish” culture places intense pressure on faculty to produce research at a rapid pace, often at the expense of other valuable contributions to academia and the profession. Despite these challenges, the research also pointed to several factors that can help faculty thrive. Mentorship and coaching programs, institutional incentives such as funding and training opportunities, and a non-competitive academic culture were all found to play a crucial role in faculty success. Writing support groups and structured retreats were identified as effective ways to help faculty meet publishing goals, while equitable workload distribution was emphasized as a necessary step in preventing burnout. Shaping a More Supportive Academic Culture In addition to identifying key barriers and facilitators, the research outlined specific recommendations for institutions looking to enhance faculty support. Providing greater transparency in tenure guidelines and encouraging diverse forms of scholarly contributions were among the suggested interventions. The research also emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of wellness and work-life balance, shifting away from rigid academic expectations and instead promoting an environment of collaboration and encouragement.
