Biography

Preston H. Miller, PhD, RN, CCRN-CMC, CFRN is an Assistant Professor and Director of Nursing Honors in the College of Nursing at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). He also serves as Affiliate Graduate Faculty in the Capstone College of Nursing at The University of Alabama and continues to practice clinically as a critical care registered nurse. Dr. Miller earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UAH and his PhD in Nursing Science through the joint doctoral program of The University of Alabama and UAH. He is currently pursuing a Master of Studies in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford. Dr. Miller's program of research focuses on moral distress, nursing ethics, moral injury, patient safety culture, healthy work environments, and workforce well-being. His scholarly work seeks to understand how ethical challenges influence healthcare professionals, organizations, and patient outcomes and to identify practical strategies that support ethical practice and human flourishing in healthcare settings. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including Nursing Ethics, Journal of Nursing Care Quality, Nursing in Critical Care, and Critical Care Nursing Clinics of North America. His research has been supported through competitive internal and external funding. In addition to his research, Dr. Miller is dedicated to educational innovation and student mentorship.

As Director of Nursing Honors, he leads initiatives that expand undergraduate engagement in research, scholarship, and leadership development. He teaches across undergraduate, doctoral, and honors curricula and mentors undergraduate honors students, Doctor of Nursing Practice students, and PhD students.

Dr. Miller is actively involved in healthcare ethics and professional service. He serves on the Huntsville Hospital Ethics Advisory Committee and previously served on the Alabama State Nurses Association Human Rights, Ethics, and Environment Committee. He has completed advanced ethics training through the Cleveland Clinic Center for Bioethics and other specialized programs focused on ethics consultation and moral distress. He is a frequent speaker on topics related to moral distress, ethics, patient safety, and nurse well-being.
