UAH - NACC

Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) and The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), a part of The University of Alabama System, announced a new partnership between NACC’s Nursing Department and UAH’s College of Nursing to offer a Dual Nursing Degree Program. The program is slated to open during the Fall 2022 semester.

Through this program, eligible students will have the opportunity to enroll at both NACC and UAH simultaneously, earning an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BSN). Students completing the Dual Nursing Degree Program will be awarded both degrees by NACC and UAH.

"We are very pleased to be a part of this partnership which unites two outstanding nursing programs," states Dr. David Campbell, President of Northeast Alabama Community College. "In this age of COVID, we know more than ever the great value of nurses and those in the healthcare fields. We look forward to working with a great school like UAH, as we have so many times in the past."

"I’d like to thank Dr. Campbell and our colleagues at Northeast Alabama Community College for their role in helping our institutions establish this important alliance," says UAH President Dr. Darren Dawson. "This new partnership will provide each of our students with an ideal pathway to the finest nursing education we can offer and demonstrates the innovative ways our two institutions can work together to improve healthcare for our communities. The dual program will ensure we continue to supply our regional healthcare providers and organizations with the most qualified nurses."

The dual program of study is designed to be completed in nine total semesters – four semesters of general education courses and five semesters of nursing courses. Students must maintain a full-time enrollment status between NACC and UAH courses through the last five semesters. Students participating in the dual program also must be unconditionally admitted to both NACC and UAH and be in good standing with both institutions. After being accepted into both programs, the student will complete their last five semesters in both nursing programs. NACC nursing courses are taught on the NACC campus with labs and clinical experiences while the UAH coursework is offered online through their BSN program.

"This collaboration will help move the nursing profession forward by working to meet one of the Future of Nursing recommendations, to promote seamless academic progression so that nurses can achieve higher levels of education including knowledge, abilities, and skills," says Dr. Marsha Howell Adams, Dean and Professor of the UAH College of Nursing.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for the highly motivated student desiring to work on both degrees simultaneously," says Dr. Myrna Williamson, NACC Nursing Program Director. "NACC has a long history of providing high-quality nursing education. With the addition of the dual nursing degree program this will provide an additional avenue for our students to seamlessly earn a BSN while earning an ADN. The NACC faculty and I are very excited for this wonderful opportunity for our students and are looking forward to working closely with UAH to offer this valuable benefit for our qualified students."

The creation of this partnership will be especially beneficial to the local medical facilities in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With the addition of the dual nursing program, graduates will be on track to meet these healthcare challenges head-on.
