Striving at offering activities and opportunities for adults 50+, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLI) at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), The University of Alabama (UA), and Auburn University, will celebrate their accomplishments and the hard work of their members and volunteers as recognized  by Alabama’s Governor, Kay Ivey in the OLLI Day Proclamation in the state of Alabama last year, on Friday, August 20, 2021 for the 2nd Annual OLLI Day Alabama.

OLLI is a member-driven organization that provides adults over the age of 50 social and intellectual opportunities. Throughout the past year, OLLI programs in the state of Alabama have continued to collaborate by providing OLLI members the opportunity to take courses from other programs through the OLLI Alabama Shares initiative online. To celebrate this collaboration and the efforts of what the staff, members, and volunteers have accomplished this past year, the local Mayors in Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and Auburn will proclaim OLLI Day in their respective cities.

“Everyone involved in OLLI has worked tremendously hard over the last 18 months and OLLI Day is a product of their dedication during this complicated time.  I’m extremely grateful to Mayor Battle for recognizing the importance of lifelong learning to the greater Huntsville community, especially during challenging times,” said Fathia Hardy, Director of Outreach and Support Services, UAH College of Professional Studies. “We are looking forward to returning to in-person programming and having Mayor Battle kick-off the celebration of our new normal.  We hope the community is able to join us and experience all of what OLLI at UAH and lifelong learning has to offer one of the best places to live in the nation!”

Mayor Tommy Battle will be attending the celebration on the UAH Campus where he will proclaim OLLI Day in the city of Huntsville and recognize OLLI at UAH in their achievements and contributions to UAH and the community. Following the proclamation, OLLI at UAH will present notable speaker Dr. E. Curt Fields with his life portrayal of Ulysses S. Grant, The Man Behind the Uniform.

Dr. Fields has portrayed Grant at numerous battle reenactments and was chosen to portray him at the 150th anniversary of Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in 2015. He is the same height and body style as General Grant and, therefore, presents a convincing, realistic image of the General. He has researched and read extensively about General Grant in order to deliver an accurate persona of the man, speaking during presentations in first person, quoting from General Grant’s memoirs, articles, and letters he wrote, or statements he made in interviews.

OLLI Day Alabama will continue with a series of notable speakers from the OLLIs at The University of Alabama, Auburn University, and the Bernard Osher Foundation.

“Alabama is so fortunate to have three strong OLLI programs at UAH, UA, and Auburn.  We are so excited to celebrate our connections again this year with special presentations from each campus”  said Jill Stewart, OLLI at UAH Board President. “And, at UAH, we are especially proud to present Dr. Curt Fields, who is the foremost living historian interpreting  the character of Ulysses S. Grant.  I think Civil War history buffs will find his portrayal of the General really remarkable.”

This complimentary event gives OLLI members and the greater Huntsville community the opportunity to socialize, meet fellow members, and support OLLI at UAH not only in Huntsville, but also state-wide.  We invite you to join us in-person on the UAH campus or online via Zoom.
