Participants at SRCLR 2018
Michael Mercier I UAH

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and OLLI at UAH teamed up August 1-3, 2018 to host the 10th consecutive meeting of the Southern Regional Conference for Learning in Retirement (SRCLR) for the first time on the UAH campus.  The conference brought together approximately 200 participants from not only the South East Region, but also Pennsylvania, Delaware, Nevada, Utah, Texas, California, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Ohio!

The purpose of the conference was to explore innovations for modern seasoned adults in the areas of curriculum, marketing, volunteerism, travel, and more!  Participants attended 25 concurrent sessions to help broaden their view in these areas in order to make their programs more effective.  They also had the opportunity to hear from the keynote speaker, G. Richard Ambrosius, on how to create mindful empowered cultures within their organizations.  Other speakers included; Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle; Dr. Christine Curtis, UAH Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center (USSRC); Mrs. Beth Altenkirch, First lady of UAH; HudsonAlpha Researchers Dr. David Bick, Dr. Nick Cochran, and Dr. Neil Lamb; Candi C. Williams, State Director of AARP of Alabama; and Best-Selling Author Homer Hickam.

Not only did participants hear from well-versed subject matters experts in the field of lifelong learning, but they had the opportunity to enjoy The Rocket City by visiting the USSRC for the Welcome Reception, the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, OLLI at UAH classrooms and UAH campus tour, Twickenham District, Bridge Street Town Centre, and Space Camp®.

The conference would not have been possible without the financial contributions of local and national sponsors Grand Circle Travel, Campus CE, Davidson Technologies, Road Scholar, Odysseys Unlimited, Redstone Federal Credit Union, Entrinksik, Xenegrade, U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Alabama AARP, and the Osher National Resource Center.

I big thank you is in order to OLLI at UAH and Board President Gratia Mahoney, the conference planning committee, UAH College of Professional Studies and Dean Karen Clanton, and the conference co-chairs Rebecca Duke and Fathia Hardy!  Without the hard work and support of these groups and individuals, the conference would not have been successful.

Please join us in Wilmington, North Carolina July 29 – 31, 2018 for the next SRCLR!
