November 2 - 8 is Compliance & Ethics Week!

Each year, the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics (SCCE) leads a powerful initiative—Compliance & Ethics Week—to spotlight the vital role that ethics and compliance play in fostering a healthy, responsible organizational culture. It’s a time when organizations and individuals reflect on not just what they must do legally and procedurally, but why ethical behavior matters. This week serves as a catalyst for dialogue, awareness, and growth. Whether it’s reinforcing trust among stakeholders, mitigating risk, or encouraging every employee to do the right thing, this week underscores the UAH Office of Risk Management and Compliance’s (ORMC) belief that strong ethics and compliance aren’t just boxes to check—they are essential foundations for sustainable success.

SCCE offers a wide range of compliance and risk resources. To learn more about SCCE, Compliance & Ethics Week, and other compliance and ethics topics, visit the SCCE website.

Compliance Updates

In a significant step toward enhancing organizational integrity and ethical standards, the University of Alabama in Huntsville has begun a phased implementation of the Institutional Conflicts of Interest and Conflicts of Commitment Policy. The policy provides clear guidance for identifying, disclosing, and managing situations where personal interests or external obligations could interfere with professional responsibilities. Broader rollout of the policy will begin in the Spring semester of 2026.

The initiative underscores the University’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and public trust. It applies to all faculty and staff, and is designed to prevent both actual and perceived conflicts that could compromise decision-making or performance. As UAH continues to grow and evolve, the policy represents a proactive investment in the culture of integrity and ethical leadership that defines the organization’s mission and values.

Key Highlights of the Policy and Procedures Include:

  • Definitions and Examples: Clear distinctions between conflicts of interest and conflicts of commitment, with real-world examples to guide interpretation
  • Disclosure Requirements: Annual and ad hoc disclosure procedures to ensure potential conflicts are identified and addressed promptly
  • Review and Management: A structured process for reviewing disclosures and implementing management plans where needed
  • Education and Training: Required annual training to help employees understand their responsibilities and the importance of compliance
