The Mace Bearer is a faculty honor and is symbolic of the faculty member's commitment of service to students, to scholarship, and to society.  The Mace Bearer title is awarded to a faculty member who has exhibited longstanding commitment and service to the University community and in recognition of his or her significant contributions to the mission of the university.

I am pleased to announce this year since we will have two Commencement Ceremonies on the same day:

  • The Colleges of Engineering and Nursing at 10:00 a.m. and the Colleges of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Business, Education, Science, and Professional Studies at 2:30 p.m., in the Fall.
  • Then Engineering and Business at 10:00 a.m. and the Colleges of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Education, Nursing, Science, and Professional Studies at 2:30 p.m. in the Spring.

We have two Mace Bearers for the Fall Ceremony and two Mace Bearers for the Spring Ceremony.

  • For the Fall Ceremony, Dr. Emil Jovanov, Associate Professor, College of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected as the Mace Bearer for the Colleges of Engineering and Nursing Commencement Ceremonies.
  • Dr. David Harwell, Associate Professor, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Department of Communication Arts, has been selected as the Mace Bearer for the Colleges of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Business, Education, Science, and Professional Studies Commencement Ceremonies.
  • For the Spring Ceremony Dr. Sampson Gholston, Associate Professor, College of Engineering, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, has been selected as the Mace Bearer for the Colleges of Engineering and Business Commencement Ceremonies.
  • Dr. Louise O’Keefe, Associate Professor, College of Nursing, has been selected as the Mace Bearer for the Colleges of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Education, Nursing, Science, and Professional Studies Commencement Ceremonies.

Drs. Jovanov, Harwell, Gholston, and O’Keefe certainly exhibit the criteria for the Mace Bearer for the University.  Please join me in congratulating Drs. Jovanov, Harwell, Gholston, and O’Keefe.
