The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is very pleased to announce the 5th annual Research Horizons Day (RHD) and Research Week to be held on the UAH campus on March 4 - 8, 2019. The Office of Academic Affairs, on behalf of the Colleges of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Honors, Nursing, Professional Studies and Science, encourages eligible UAH students to participate. The purpose of the event is to highlight and celebrate the research and creative work of our students. Please note that RHD will be held in March, before Spring Break this year.

Current UAH graduate and undergraduate students from all disciplines and majors who have completed research or creative projects under the mentorship of faculty or research staff between Spring Semester 2018 through the deadline (January 25, 2019) are eligible and encouraged to apply. Selected posters/creative projects will be judged and prizes will be awarded by each respective college.

The research or creative project can have been done outside of UAH, but the abstract and poster must be endorsed by a UAH faculty member or research staff. There is no cost to the student to apply or participate. A student, as lead/main author, is limited to one submission.

Abstracts must be submitted online. Already existing physical posters from other events in 2018 are also eligible. These posters must be ones that have already been approved by your mentor, and were used in an academic or professional poster event in 2018. Examples include the Von Braun Symposium (VBS), Research or Creative Experience for Undergraduates (RCEU), Honor Capstone Research (HCR), American Geophysical Union (AGU), etc. or other professional/academic symposia. Posters from last year's Research Horizons Day are excluded. The intent behind using already existing posters is to highlight as much research as possible and reduce costs, since they will not be reprinted for this event.

Abstracts (for new posters) and already physically existing posters can be submitted online at: https://goo.gl/forms/c295xFHGt1GhpJgO2

All abstract or poster (if already physically existing from a prior event) submissions must be received by Friday, January 25, 2019, 12PM (noon) CST. The Call for Submissions can also be found at the UAH Student Research website (https://www.uah.edu/undergraduate-research) under the “Annual Events and Outreach” tab.

Submissions will be vetted by each college before final selection of participants is decided shortly after the deadline. If the abstract is accepted and there is no poster from a prior event, the student will receive a PowerPoint template. The completed poster is due by Thursday, February 28, 2019 by 12PM (noon) CST. Accepted students are expected to present a poster, and must attend the poster event. The poster session will be held in early March (day, date, time, place TBD).

Abstracts. The abstract should include the title of the creative project or research and a brief summary of the focus of the project. The abstract should be limited to a maximum of 250 words.

The student is required to work with a mentor (faculty, research staff, etc.). The work should be substantially the work of the student, and be sufficiently complete to warrant public presentation. Students must notify their mentor that they are intending to participate. The mentor should give guidance and advice, and is responsible for approving the accuracy and content of the abstract and poster. The mentor’s name must appear with the author’s name or in the acknowledgments section of the poster, whichever is appropriate.

If accepted to participate, the student agrees to allow the use of his/her name and subsequent photos in all materials pertaining to the promotion of Research Horizons Day. Usage may include your name and picture on the UAH website, related social media and published in print materials. Captions for the photographs may include first and last names, mentor’s name, majors, and titles and descriptions of the research project.
