The Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program sponsors an educational competition that fosters exploration of women and gender among college students.

23rd Annual Kathryn L. Harris WGS Writing Competition

WGS at UAH honors undergraduate and graduate written work that deals substantially with women, women’s issues, or the study of gender. We invite the submission of both analytical essays and creative writing. Cash prizes of up to $100 will be awarded. Submit entries via email to wgs@uah.edu or in-person to the WGS Program Director’s Office (MOR 278M) by February 15, 2023.

Submission Rules

  • Entries will only be accepted from currently enrolled UAH students
  • All entries must have been written for a UAH course. Entries previously submitted to this contest will not be accepted
  • All entries must be written in, or translated into, English
  • Any field of study is eligible, as long as women’s and/or gender issues are substantially addressed
  • Entries may be no more than 15 typed pages
  • All references must be cited appropriately
  • Entries must include a cover page with the title of the work, the author’s name, and, if applicable, the name of the course and professor originally assigning the work.  The author’s name should not appear on any page of the entry except the cover

Assessment Criteria

  • Persuasiveness, clarity, and coherence of argument or narrative
  • Efficiency of organization
  • Effectiveness and appropriateness of language
  • Proficiency in grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Deadline

  • Submit entries via email to wgs@uah.edu or in-person to the WGS Program Director’s Office (MOR 278M) by February 15, 2023.
