Biography

Jack Hontz serves as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Wind Conducting at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. His primary responsibilities at UAH include serving as conductor of the Wind Ensemble, teaching a variety of music courses, and recruiting the upcoming classes of UAH musicians.

Dr. Hontz is a graduate of the University of Miami where he served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant with the Frost Bands. Prior to his time at the University of Miami, Dr. Hontz was the Director of Bands at Henderson High School in West Chester, PA where he oversaw all elements of the band program. His recent transcriptions of French composer Lili Boulanger’s music have been performed by leading wind ensembles throughout the country, most notably at the 2023 College Band Director’s National Association Conference and 2022 American Bandmaster’s Association National Conference. Dr. Hontz is forever indebted to his primary conducting teachers and mentors, including Dr. Robert Carnochan (University of Miami), Dr. Andrew Yozviak (West Chester University) and Dr. M. Gregory Martin (West Chester University). Outside of his studies and teaching, Dr. Hontz enjoys hiking, swimming, and rooting for the New York Yankees.
