About Art Department

The Department of Art, Art History, and Design has a highly qualified faculty and an exciting and diverse student body. Our spacious, well-equipped studios and classrooms are located in Wilson and Roberts Halls. We have three gallery spaces, each with a different character, in which we host student shows as well as exhibitions by regionally and nationally recognized artists.

Mentoring and Professional Training

When asked what they like the most about our department, most of our students and graduates say it's our emphasis on one-on-one mentoring and the professional training that we've built into our program.

Hands-On Experience

Our capstone courses provide start-to-finish team projects for real clients in web design and game development. In addition, our professional practices course introduces many career paths; hands-on experience in design, promotion, and gallery management; and the development of portfolios to use after graduation.

We know that practical experience as an artist is invaluable, which is why we encourage all of our students to intern with local businesses. These can range from advertising agencies like Younger Associates to individual businesses with design needs like Benefield Homes to public institutions like the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and Merrimack Hall. Our students have also done internships at NASA, Boeing, Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation, Pinnacle Solutions, Inc., Brainy Pixel Productions, CFD Research Corporation, Hudson Alpha, and Weird Giraffe Games.

Some of our students even work right here on campus in our Profession Development Department and the Student Life office.

Graduate School

Many of our students choose to pursue art at the graduate level – and thanks to their high-quality work and the close mentoring of our faculty, almost 90% of them are accepted into the programs they want with full assistantships and living stipends.

Mission Statement

Our program provides an inclusive learning environment where creative expression, critical thinking and collaboration are fundamental. We embrace exploration and innovation, traditional and new technologies, and the complex history of art and design. We value a diverse community of artists and scholars, which is necessary to solve problems within an increasingly complex visual culture. We prepare students for the important role that artistic and intellectual pursuits play within their lives and throughout our culture.
