Mr. Dave Simmons

Principal Research Scientist IV, Rotorcraft Systems Engineering & Simulation Center (RSESC)

David Earl Simmons graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a B.S.E.E. degree in 1979. He has worked for various government contractors and commercial companies throughout his career. While at General Telephone and Electric he wrote code and designed circuits for microprocessor based telephony test equipment used in production of telephones such as the “flip-phone”. At Chrysler Electronics, he designed custom digital and analog boards for microprocessor based test equipment used by production to test automotive electronics such as engine controllers, instrument clusters, etc. In 1989, Dave began supporting NASA scientists designing data systems and instrumentation electronics for scientific payloads flying on the NASA ER-2 (U-2), DC-8, WB-57 and the Global Hawk. Data Systems and instruments included the Hurricane Imaging Radiometer (HIRAD), Advanced Microwave Precipitation Radiometer (AMPR) and the Lightning Instrumentation Package (LIP). Support for these important and actively used payloads continues today. Dave also led a team to develop a calibration facility for the Optical Transient Detector (OTD) that flew on a low orbit satellite.

In 2001, Dave began supporting the US Army and DoD for various projects. These projects have included systems engineering and technical assistance to the Ground-based Missile Defense (GMD) where he supported testing at Kwajalein, Vandenberg and Sunnyvale, CA. Recently, he lead a team of Hardware/Software engineers, pilots and students to develop a National Airspace Trainer (AB3NAT) for the Apache Block III PM. He is currently leading an effort to upgrade/update the electrical systems on the Aviation Ground Power Unit (AGPU) for the US Army at Redstone.

Dave also provides systems engineering and integration support for various bio-tech projects in Huntsville.
