Kayla Hiland and a veterinarian doing surgery on a pet

Kayla is an upcoming junior Biology major with a Spanish minor at UAH with a focus in pre-veterinary medicine. Kayla has always want to attend vet school and is continuing to follow that path. Kayla found a great opportunity while researching various study abroad programs through the school and found Animal Experience International.

I think it is very important to raise awareness for positive animal welfare.

KAYLA HILAND

Animal Experience International offers a number of veterinary experiences around the world. Kayla chose the Dog Rescue in Mexico due to her studying Spanish in school and hoping to one day work as a small animal veterinarian. Kayla had a homestay with the founders of the rescue organization, Amigos Pro Animal and worked with homeless and injured animals during her stay.

During her visit, she would give animals different medications and shadow veterinarians working with abused animals or animals that had been involved in accidents. Amigos Pro Animal would attend events in the city of Aguascalientes and promote animal welfare, the importance of spay and neutering, or the organization itself.

Kayla is hoping to return to Amigos Pro Animal while expanding her experiences to different countries as well. Kayla plans to graduate in May of 2020 and attend veterinary school the following Fall semester to get her Doctorate of Veterinarian Medicine.
