Biography

Dr. Azita Amiri, PhD, MPH, CPH, RN, FAAN, is Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Nursing at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). She also serves as Executive Director of UAH Neighborhood Nursing, a community-centered initiative focused on improving health outcomes and reducing health disparities across North Alabama. A nationally recognized nurse scientist and Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), Dr. Amiri is known for her innovative work at the intersection of nursing, public health, environmental health, and community engagement. Her research has concentrated on environmental determinants of health, health equity, maternal and child health, rural and underserved populations, occupational and environmental exposures, and community-based strategies to improve population health. Dr. Amiri earned a PhD and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a Master of Midwifery from Iran Medical Sciences University. She is certified as a registered nurse and a Public Health professional and completed advanced training through the Bloomberg American Health Initiative and the University of California, San Francisco. Prior to immigrating to the United States, she worked as a clinical midwife and research leader in Iran. Throughout her career, Dr. Amiri has secured over $1 million in collaborative and independent grant funding, including support from the National Academies, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and various public health and nursing organizations. Her scholarly work has been published in top nursing, public health, and environmental health journals and has expanded knowledge in environmental justice, maternal and child health, cancer prevention, food insecurity, occupational health, and community health innovation. At UAH, Dr. Amiri has held numerous leadership roles, including serving as Faculty Senate President and Chair of the Nursing and Aerospace Committee. She is a strong supporter of interdisciplinary collaboration and has helped form partnerships connecting nursing with public health, engineering, aerospace, and community groups. Beyond academia,

Dr. Amiri is widely recognized for her dedication to community involvement and health equity. Her work with environmental justice groups, food security programs, and UAH Neighborhood Nursing demonstrates her commitment to delivering evidence-based health solutions directly to the communities that need them most. She has held national leadership positions with the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, including Chair of the Board of Directors, and continues to mentor emerging nurse scientists and public health leaders. Dr. Amiri provides a global perspective and a strong commitment to improving health and well-being through research, education, service, and innovation. Her work is guided by the belief that strong partnerships among universities, healthcare systems, policymakers, and communities are essential for creating healthier, more equitable futures.
