UAH Theatre’s century-spanning season closes out the fall semester with the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play “Proof.” Written by David Auburn, this drama brings together the traditional themes of a family struggling to come to terms with its past and forge a new future through the non-traditional lens of theoretical mathematics.

On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a gifted mathematician, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician himself. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind.

A staple of American theatre since its Broadway debut in 2001, “Proof” is directed by Karen Baker, a lecturer in UAH’s Theatre Program. “Dealing with the extended illness of a loved one and how that affects us, as well as those around us, is a growing issue. The topics are serious, but the characters do have moments of levity, joy, love – the things we need most when times seem grim,” says Baker, who praises the cast and crew of the production as easy to work with and extremely talented. “The struggles, hopes, and fears that the characters experience are universal. It’s nice to know we are not alone.”

“Proof” will run Nov. 9-12 and 16-19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 13 and 20 at 2:30 p.m. in Wilson Theatre on the UAH campus. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $7 for seniors and non-UAH students, and free for UAH students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door, online by visiting eventbrite.com, or by calling 256.824.6871.
