New Gulf Scholars Certificate Program offers fully funded, hands-on learning opportunity

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), in partnership with Calhoun Community College (CCC), is now offering students a chance to make a real impact through the Gulf Scholars Program (GSP) — a fully funded, interdisciplinary certificate program that prepares undergraduates to tackle complex environmental, health, and infrastructure challenges in the Gulf region. UAH is part of The University of Alabama System.

The program is part of a five-year, $12.7 million pilot funded by the Gulf Research Program (GRP) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. UAH received a $600,000 grant to establish the initiative. UAH and CCC are among 24 institutions selected across the Gulf South to join the program, which emphasizes hands-on learning, leadership development and community impact.

“Students will tackle complex issues, addressing deeply rooted challenges facing Gulf communities,” says Dr. Azita Amiri, professor in the College of Nursing at UAH and lead faculty for the initiative. “The Gulf Scholars Program will open up remarkable opportunities for them in terms of academic and professional growth.”

Students will also benefit from UAH and CCC’s strong regional partnerships. Organizations like Energy Alabama and the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice offer both paid and unpaid internships, networking opportunities and in-kind support for student projects.

What students can expect

  • A 12-credit-hour certificate — paid in full. Students will complete three interdisciplinary courses and a Gulf Impact Project — all with full tuition support — along with 30+ hours of service learning.
  • $1,000 for project work and travel funding. Students receive dedicated funding to support their Gulf Impact Project and may apply for additional funds for conference travel and awards
  • Real-world experience. From internships to fieldwork and research, students engage directly with community-based organizations working in areas like environmental justice, public health, clean energy and coastal resilience.
  • Professional mentorship and networking. Each student works closely with faculty mentors and regional partners, building relationships that support both academic and career goals.
  • Skill-building for future leaders. The program offers workshops in sustainability, advocacy, entrepreneurship, and data science, plus opportunities to develop leadership, communication and public service skills.
