Dr. Armentrout obtained a PhD from the University of Denver investigating the Acoustic Emission generated from Aluminum Alloys. He work at Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site from 1990 to 1996, where he worked with the scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigating radioactive waste encapsulation techniques. Returning to the University of Denver (DU) in 1996, he began research investigating electrical and mechanical failure mechanisms in high-voltage composite insulators. He has taught a diverse mix of graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering, general engineering, physics and general science. In his 14 years at DU, his research concentrated primarily on the testing and analysis of composite materials exposed to extreme environments. Over time at DU, he held many positions including lecturer, Associate Chair and Chair of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. He has published 37 articles in international journals and over 20 conference proceedings. He left DU in 2011 to be closer to family and a new granddaughter and began teaching at UAH in 2012. He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Colorado.
