Jeffrey W. Elam, Chemist and Group Leader of the Energy Systems Division at Argonne National Laboratory, will be the guest speaker for a public talk at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Elam will give the presentation "Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications of Nanocomposite Coatings with Tunable Properties Prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition," at 10 a.m., in the Engineering Building room 135. The talk is free and open to the public. His visit to the university is sponsored by the UAH Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering.

Dr. Jeffrey W. Elam serves as Principal Chemist and Group Leader at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) where he directs a program in atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology with the goal of developing new applications for ALD in fields such as photovoltaics, catalysis, batteries, lithography, and large- area detectors.

As a postdoctoral researcher at The University of Colorado, Elam developed ALD thin film growth methods. He has authored over 200 papers and is an inventor on over 50 patents and inventions related to ALD. Elam has won four R&D100 Awards, and is heavily involved in chairing and organizing ALD sessions at ECS and AVS.

Elam's honors and awards include R&D 100 Award (2012) "Large Area Microchannel Plates," and R&D 100 Award (2008) "Ultrananocrystalline Diamond (UNCD) Mechanical Seals." He is a member of Argonne-Northwestern Solar Energy Research Center, Argonne Center for Electrical Energy Storage and The Institute for Atom-Efficient Chemical Transformations.

Elam earned a B.A. in Chemistry from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from The University of Chicago.
