Matthew Darnell

UAH Welcomes Distinguished Speaker Dr. Matthew Darnell.

University of Pittsburgh

Dr. Matthew E. Darnell, RD, SCCC, CSSD will visit The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) on March 12 as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series.

Darnell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition and the director and creator of the Sports Science Master's Program at the University of Pittsburgh, will give a campus-wide talk entitled "The Art of Science – Bridging the Gap Between Sport Science Research and Practical Applications in Human Performance and Nutrition." The talk will be held in the Shelby Center (SST 301) on Thursday, March 12, at 3 p.m.

Along with being a Registered Dietitian, Darnell is also a board-certified specialist in Sports Dietetics and a certified strength and conditioning coach. Darnell currently serves as the sports dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers and has experience working with military Special Forces.

His research interests include nutrition and exercise approaches for improved athletic performance, injury prevention, and rehabilitation.

UAH Assistant Professor of Kinesiology, Dr. Paul N. Whitehead, says Sports Science is a way to take the research made by exercise scientists and kinesiologists and apply it to athletes. He says Darnell is a proponent of making that connection.

"He's seen world-class athletes from a tactical and sporting standpoint, and so I think he's right there in terms of the cutting edge- at least in the US; for sure in terms of making that connection between research and practical application," says Whitehead. "His talk will bridge those two worlds together."

The UAH Distinguished Speaker Series is sponsored by the university's Office of the Provost. The talk is free and open to the public.
