Program Description

The Alabama Research Experiences for Undergraduates (ALREU) program is a 10-week summer internship program for undergraduate students enrolled at HBCU institutions across the southeastern U.S. (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, West Virginia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico).

The program provides students with quality research experiences at CPU2AL partner institutions in a broad spectrum of disciplines. The ultimate goal of the program is to engage a diverse, educated, and skilled pool of scientists and engineers to promote long-term relationships between students and investigators to enhance the Alabama workforce.

The ALREU program is envisioned to run in parallel to NSF REU programs at the different institutions.

Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, we are preparing multiple options to ensure that the internship will take place. We are currently planning for an in-person internship. However, if the situation worsens, we will consider a possible hybrid or fully virtual options. For any in-person component, we will ensure that there is the adequate physical spacing between workspaces, following all cleaning protocols set by the host institution and the government.

How to Apply

If you are a student at an HBCU institution in Alabama and are interested in this opportunity, please click the apply button after reviewing the eligibility conditions below. You will need to create an account on our sign-up page to complete this application, you will have to upload your resume and academic records (for example, transcripts), provide a 150-word essay about why you want to join the program, and provide contact information for two or three references (two required). You may choose to provide two or three references, but if you provide three, all three references need to upload a reference letter for your application to be complete. Your references will get an email right when you submit your application – you are responsible to check with them beforehand whether they want to provide a reference for you and let them know that they will get an automated email from us. You will get a notification email when a reference uploads a reference letter. If one or more of your references have not uploaded a letter by the deadline, your application is deemed incomplete. Academic records must be in English and must display the name of the institution, name of the student, completed coursework and grades and must show the equivalent of at least your last year of full-time postsecondary school attendance. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. You will also need to select and rank one to three ALREU projects

If you have any technical issues with the application, please contact nsfepscor@uah.edu.
