The Experience section can be a daunting part of your resume, especially if you feel like you have no relevant previous experience that would be applicable to prospective jobs. Well, think again! You DO have skills that you can highlight through your experiences, and we are here to show you how!

The bullet points within the Experience section of your resume can be one of the most stressful parts to complete. When you are new to college and have not had an internship or degree-specific job yet, you may feel like you have no translatable experience at all and you might just skip this section altogether or focus on aspects of the job that are not as relevant to the employer. Well, think again! You have tons of relevant skills to show off, you may just need a little help with highlighting them!

Have you worked in retail? Sales? If you answered yes to either of these, then you have many relevant skills. If you have worked part time in retail or sales, then you most likely exhibit the ability to adapt quickly, work well under pressure, can take inventory, place bulk orders, show your value as a team player, and have high attention to detail all while representing the company and selling the brand. The best part of this is all of these skills can directly translate into various markets that are hiring right now!

Have you worked in a group project? Been paired up with someone for training at work? If you answered yes, then you probably have a strong team player trait and can communicate effectively with others. You are also able to adapt and can take the lead when necessary. These are traits employers value very highly because teamwork is vital in any well functioning workplace.

Have you worked in fast food or in a restaurant? If you answered yes, then you are most likely a flexible employee with the ability to multitask. You are able to work a point-of-service (POS) system with speed and accuracy. You have the ability to keep a high level of composure and possess an excellent level of customer service, even during rushes. You can build loyal clientele through friendly interactions and consistent appreciation.  These traits are not undervalued by employers. Let these skills shine, this is not the time to be humble!

Don’t let your resume overwhelm you. You possess many abilities that you have picked up from working part-time in high school or college, group projects, and more! Have faith in your abilities and skills; we promise they are there, you just have to know what you’re looking for!
