Congratulations to the following students:

madison travis 2020

Each year, UAH recognizes one student employee as the Student Employee of the Year.  The Student Employee of the Year Award is a national competition that allows student employees to be recognized for the excellence they have shown in their on-campus jobs. Students are judged based on how well they exhibit mastery of the NACE Career Readiness Competencies in their work. This academic year, Madison Travis was chosen among many strong applicants for the campus award.  Madison is a Marketing Major that works as the Social Media Coordinator for the I2C (Invention to Innovation Center).

Throughout her time at the I2C, Madison’s colleagues have noticed her leadership and immense desire to be very involved with her job and be an asset to the team.  Though she is the Social Media Coordinator, Madison’s involvement has gone well beyond the screen. She has been involved in networking nights, working hand-in-hand with successful companies and engaging the Huntsville community.  Madison’s nominator said, “She is constantly trying to make connections with those that can teach her valuable information, guide her in her career, and benefit her current job.”

Reflecting on her position, Madison says, “My opportunity to work at the I2C has been more than I could have ever imagined. My supervisors are the best at supporting me, giving me endless learning experiences, and teaching me so many valuable skills. I have been able to expand my network, learn from experienced, determined professionals, and work with amazing companies. A little internship for me on campus has turned into the most amazing opportunity experience for me. It has led to me starting my own company, something I would have never imagined I would be doing at 19. I will be forever grateful for the I2C.”

Congratulations Madison!

juwuan turner howard 2020

Each academic year, the Office of Career Services selects one student to receive the Co-Op Student of the Year Award at the Student Leadership Awards Ceremony. The award recognizes students that have made substantial contributions to their employers through a co-op, in the classroom and on the UAH Campus.  Juwuan Turner-Howard is the 2019-2020 Co-Op of the Year recipient.

Juwuan is a Computer Science Major with Co-Op experience at Google (he will return for his third Summer at Google) and internship experience at Microsoft and Zillow. He has also worked as a student programmer while on campus at UAH. Throughout these experiences, Juwuan has used his knowledge, gained both in the classroom and on the job, to solve problems and develop new applications and frameworks for the betterment of his employers. One of Juwuan’s supervisors at Google described him as “passionate, generous and curious,” always looking for ways to learn and drive his professional development.

Outside of his co-ops and internships, Juwuan has held leadership roles on campus including serving as President of the National Society of Black Engineers. Juwuan also mentors students and looks for opportunities to volunteer in the community and give back.

Juwuan has a strong motivation to take advantage of any opportunity that he can. He says, “I have done and am continuing to do everything in my best interest to develop an impactful career and life. My Google experiences have taken me from my hometown of Prichard, Alabama to California, New York City, and even Dublin, Ireland. Additionally, it has aided in my development through adolescence, which has expedited and increased my thinking process within industry and life. I am thankful and grateful my mother, hard work, neighborhood, and university have put me on track to accomplish my career goals and positively influence the educational dynamic of my family as a first-generation college student.”

Congratulations Juwuan!
