Meet Lucas McClanahan: a senior from Columbia, Tennessee, Lucas is studying Computer Engineering, is a member of the i4 program at UAH, and has an internship at Northrop Grumman. Lucas shares some of his story, advice, and how he has grown since his time at UAH.
We got the opportunity to engage Lucas and ask him a few questions about his journey here to UAH and into the world of professionalism. Take a read below to hear more about him:
1) What made you choose your major?
I've always been obsessed with technology. From a young age, I was always "fixing" someone's computer, so I decided I'd make a career doing what I love!
2) What brought you from Columbia, TN to UAH?
Between the merit-based scholarship opportunities and the internship opportunities across the road in Research Park, it was a no-brainer.
3) What is one thing you would tell someone interested in obtaining a co-op or internship who might be a little hesitant?
Do it. Utilize the career fair, Career Services, Google, whatever it takes, just keep applying until you find one and do it.
4) What are some lessons you have learned from your internship?
It's okay to ask questions. Your co-workers want you to succeed, so they don't mind helping you. You will not know the answer, and you will not always succeed, but the only way to truly fail is to not learn from your mistakes.
5) How has your internship grown you as a person?
I'm more mature. I have a better understanding of the workforce, and I feel more confident in my abilities.
6) What surprised you, if anything, about your internship?
I'm doing actual work, not just getting coffee. People care about my opinion and are happy with my results.
7) What was one of the funniest things that happened to you while working at your internship?
At my first internship, my co-workers were hilarious. Even though I don't work there anymore, we all meet up often, and I still get so many memes texted to me.
