After six years of serving her country in the United States Air Force, Elizbeth Skyy Rogers has found her place as a college student, mother and advocate for animals in Huntsville.
“Being from a military family has shaped me into a very adaptable person,” Rogers said, “and being in the military myself has taught me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.”
Rogers was born into a military family and traveled the world at a young age.
“I had a passport by the time I was 3. This also allowed me to see other cultures firsthand. I find that experiencing other cultures can show you how great America really is, while teaching you how to respect differences.”
Rogers joined the military in 2013, making her a third-generation veteran. She was deployed around the world, taught tower climbing classes, oversaw equipment and worked in project management and radio communications. Rogers was an honors graduate from basic training, receiving a 90 or above on her physical and mental test and qualifying on the shooting range her first time.
“I believe that everyone who does not go straight into college or a career should join the military,” she said. “I am proud to be a part of the less than 1% of Americans that have joined to protect the freedoms of Americans.”
While raising her daughter, Rogers also fosters dogs and advocates for the welfare of animals in shelters. “I see so many animals on social media that are adopted out of impulse and then neglected, thrown to the side or worse. At this time, all the shelters are full and having to turn away animals. This is unacceptable and should be taken a lot more seriously than it is. This situation is serious and innocent animals’ lives are being taken every day.” With her degree in management, Rogers looks forward to the future. “I would enjoy going back into project management when I graduate. I am also looking into starting a sanctuary for animals.” Rogers encourages those like her to pursue their dreams. “I would tell someone in a similar situation as me to not limit yourself. I have never met a person that is not capable of doing what they set their mind to. Rather, I meet people who let their self-doubt hold them back. In a nutshell, take the more exciting route even if it’s scary. Try your hardest.”
