Neomi Marriam: building community through leadership and kindness
By: Jean Anderson
Neomi Marriam, a mother, military veteran, College of Business ambassador and campus leader, is dedicated to fostering a supportive community through mentorship, advocacy and everyday acts of kindness.
Marriam’s leadership style was shaped by her time in the U.S. Army, where she held the highest rank of sergeant first class (SFC/E-7). In that role, she was responsible for mentoring, guiding and preparing junior soldiers for the next steps in their careers.
“I trained them, taught them and pulled them out of ruts,” she explains. “If they trip, pick them back up and keep going.”
She also encouraged perseverance, often reminding soldiers, “Don’t let one bad leader make you quit on something you love.”
Similarly, she describes that her time with the Military Police Corps taught her the value of showing kindness in a position of authority. Her dedication to her work in the Military Police Corps earned her the Order of the Marechaussee, a prestigious award recognizing her outstanding service in the field. These experiences reinforced her commitment to leadership and mentorship — a mindset she now applies to her interactions with fellow students.
As a nontraditional student, Marriam works to bridge the gap between different student populations.
“I want them (other nontraditional students) to feel like this is a place of comfort where they can come when they need to,” she says.
In addition to her organized efforts, she also focuses on everyday acts of kindness.
“You never know what kind of day someone is having. Something as simple as having a smile on your face can make someone’s day better.” Marriam is currently studying management with a minor in human resources. Despite the challenges of returning to school after a long break, she has maintained honors status throughout her time at UAH.
“I was very surprised and happy with myself,” she says. “But at the same time, I’m also showing my kids what’s possible. It’s never too late in life as long as you apply yourself.”
Marriam serves as the social media coordinator for the Distributive Education Club of America (DECA), is an active member of the Women in Business and Leadership (WIBL) club and represents the College of Business as an ambassador. During the UAH College of Business Clubsgiving event in the fall of 2024, she donated a variety of essential goods to support those in need.
“I grew up with so little, and now I have so much—I have to give back,” she says. Her contributions helped DECA and WIBL place first and second in the donation drive.
