Alexa Douthitt continues to remain “contagiously calm” as she navigates athletics and academics

As a student athlete and management major at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Alexa Douthitt has made strides in integrating both pursuits to make for a successful upcoming career in sports management.

Douthitt has been a member of the UAH women’s softball team since her freshman year of college.

“As a member of the softball team, I’ve learned the importance of time management and prioritization,” she says.

Douthitt joined the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), where she worked with fellow athletes to foster community engagement and promote student welfare.

During her time playing softball for UAH, Douthitt garnered numerous awards. In 2024, she was named a College Sports Communicators First Team Academic All-America honoree. She would become the 33rd CSC Academic All-American in department history. She is also the first UAH softball player to earn this recognition since 2007. She was also named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) second-team all-American. She has also won Gulf South Conference Co-Player of the Year.

In August of 2024, she began interning at the Athletics Compliance office at UAH.

“My internship in athletic compliance here at UAH provides me with a unique perspective on the intersection of sports and business, allowing me to learn about regulations and policies that govern collegiate athletics,” says Douthitt, adding that this experience reinforced her passion for business and motivated her to explore various paths within the field.

Douthitt recounts her freshman year of college being particularly challenging.

“It was already a big adjustment, and then when you throw athletics in, it can just add a lot more to the plate,” she admits. “When you are challenged, you learn so much about yourself, and from there, you learn how to amplify the positive aspects of yourself and tame the unhealthy and negative parts.”

“Alexa has a 4.0 GPA while managing a full softball schedule, an internship in the athletics compliance office, and a full-time class schedule,” says UAH Assistant Director of Compliance and Student-Athlete Development, Reagan Schutee. “She makes it look simple and is a role model for her teammates, classmates and community. She holds herself to high standards and exceeds them at every turn.”

Douthitt has had the opportunity to intern at Bryant Bank during the summer of 2024. There, she worked on the teller line, maintained organized files, shadowed branch development and much more.

“This experience helped me develop strong analytical skills and better understand how businesses function,” she says.

Outside of her professional and athletic accomplishments, Douthitt takes joy in volunteering. “I participated in the Buddy Walk to support individuals with Down Syndrome, helped organize two Trunk or Treat events that provided a fun way for local children to celebrate Halloween and get a look at UAH athletics, and took part in an Adapted Baseball Tournament, which was exciting to see athletes of all abilities enjoy the sport I love,” she says. Douthitt is also a member of the UAH Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where she finds support and gets to fellowship with other athletes who share the same values.

Douthitt defines success as “excelling at what you like to do.” She adds that what’s successful to her may not be successful to somebody else because they may not value the same things.

Douthitt says the UAH College of Business (COB) has been a tremendous help in getting opportunities. “I think that the biggest thing that has helped is that the UAH COB is active in the community.“

Almost all my internships and jobs have come from the fact that UAH is so involved within the Huntsville community.” When asked what quote she lives by, Douthitt said, “Contagiously Calm.” She strives to be and embody this every day.

Douthitt is expected to graduate in May 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in business management.
