Welcome to the latest edition of the UAH Mission Accessible updates. As we cross into the second half of the year, our commitment to building a culture of accessibility continues! This month, we are happy to announce the availability of checklists and reference guides designed to help you create accessible digital content.

Now Available! Word and PowerPoint Accessibility Checklists

New Checklists for Accessible Word Documents and PowerPoint Presentations are now available as a standalone module in UAH Mission Accessible (opens in a new tab). These checklists guide you through the practical steps for creating accessible documents and presentations, beginning with foundational practices such as meaningful titles, headings, readable text, lists, links, alt text, and the Accessibility Checker. Each checklist also includes embedded tutorials to support success along the way. You can follow the steps through the final stage of creating more accessible PDF documents from Word files and PowerPoint presentations. Use them as a quick reference while creating, reviewing, or preparing materials to share with students, colleagues, or the public. These checklists are also available outside of Canvas as direct links on the Mission Accessible webpage:

Digital Accessibility Toolkit

The Digital Accessibility Task Force has been hard at work expanding our self-service resources. The team is currently drafting a new series of Knowledge Base Articles (KBAs) that will be published in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Client Portal.

Here is a look at what went live recently:

  • Essential Guides: Boost your digital accessibility skills with guides on Alt Text Best Practices, Creating Accessible Emails in Outlook, Website Accessibility Quick Start, and Writing Accessible Filenames & Using Metadata.

We’ll be adding more articles, so bookmark the Digital Accessibility Toolkit (OIT Portal) (opens in a new tab) to view what’s new and keep learning!

If you have not yet finished the Launch course or would like to confirm your completion status, please visit Canvas (opens in a new tab).

Accessibility Fun Fact

From an assistive tool to a global craze! Fidget spinners were originally designed as an assistive tool. Before they became a massive global toy craze in 2017, fidget tools were used by therapists, teachers, and individuals with ADHD, autism, or anxiety.
