Hello,
This orientation season, UAH will host a new meet-up for first-generation students and their families. I invite first-gen faculty and staff to be part of that welcome. We are looking for 3-5 volunteers for each orientation session to lead conversations with a small group of 5-10 students or family members. The Academic Success Advocacy Program will be on hand to host. The meet-ups are scheduled from 9:00 - 9:25 a.m. throughout the summer, and all but one date is on a Thursday.
The program is brief (25 minutes) and relatively informal. After a quick welcome, we'll ask students and parents to divide into small groups. As a conversation leader, you'd facilitate introductions in your small group, reflect on a lesson from your own college experience, and then lead a discussion using any of the provided prompts. We anticipate that conversations will last roughly 15 minutes.
Through these initial conversations, we want students and family members to explore the excitement (and possible apprehension) about coming to college, foster a connection with peers, and hear from someone (you) who walked a similar academic path.
If you are interested in facilitating one or more small group discussions, please sign up here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wzTd50HSUBZ5yHfD2S8c-EF1yC2V3TgUbrqoYsUWn1U/edit?usp=sharing. There are ten orientation sessions to choose from.
Thank you!
