Sean Lane

Dr. Sean M. Lane has been appointed dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UAH.

Sean M. Lane is the new dean for the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). He will begin his duties on July 5.

He currently serves as Acting Dean of the Graduate School at Louisiana State University (LSU).

“I am appreciative of the opportunity to join UAH at such an exciting time during its history. The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHS) has long played a key role in the education of all UAH students, developed innovative programs, been deeply engaged with the Huntsville community, and contributed outstanding scholarship,” said Lane. “I look forward to working together with our faculty, staff and students to create an even more compelling future for the college; one that includes helping students to acquire the skills and knowledge they need to live fulfilling lives in an increasingly complex and technological world,” he added.

Prior to his current appointment as Acting Dean of the Graduate School at LSU, Lane held positions of Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Associate Chair of Psychology, Program Head of Cognitive and Brain Sciences Doctoral Program, and Director of Research in the Department of Psychology. Prior to coming to LSU, he held several industry positions in the area of Human Factors and User Experience Design in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lane’s research examines, the mechanisms underlying learning and memory, and how these mechanisms influence behavior in complex real-world settings such as the legal arena and the classroom.

“Dr. Lane has numerous distinctions and achievements and brings a wealth of experience in leadership and administration, research, scholarship, and teaching. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Lane as the new Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UAH,” said Dr. Christine W. Curtis, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Lane previously served as Associate Editor of the scholarly journal, Applied Cognitive Psychology, and currently serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied. His honors and awards include Institute for Management and Leadership in Education, SEC Academic Leadership Development Program, Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award, University Distinguished Teaching Award and William Morris Teaching Award. He holds memberships in numerous organizations including American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Psychology-Law Society, Association for Psychological Science, Psychonomic Society (Fellow) and Society for Applied Research in Memory and Cognition.

Lane earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Fresno, a Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology from Kent State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Experimental Psychology from Kent State University.
