Tyanna J. Buie

Artist and educator Tyanna J. Buie will give a public talk on the UAH campus Thursday, March 7.

Nationally recognized visual artist and educator Tyanna J. Buie, will visit The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) campus next month.

Buie is an Assistant Professor/Section Chair of Printmaking at The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. She will serve as a visiting artist on the UAH campus March 3-9. Buie will give a talk on Thursday, March 7, at 5 p.m. in Wilson Hall room 168.

During her UAH presentation, Buie will speak about her creative research in creating large-scale contemporary artworks that use the artistic techniques of screen-printing, a stencil method of printmaking. The event is free and open to the public.

Katie Baldwin, UAH Assistant Professor of Printmaking, who was instrumental in coordinating Buie’s visit to campus, explains the importance of her work.

"I am thrilled to have Professor Tyanna Buie share her artwork with our students and community," said Baldwin. "Through her bold, beautiful work in screen-printing, Professor Buie reconstructs her personal family history by combining narrative imagery with overlapping colors and patterns. The result is monumental work that speaks to the elusive nature of memory. However, the work is not simply nostalgic, as it pieces together the complexity of real-life experience," Baldwin added.

A Chicago native, Buie creates mural-sized memorial work inspired by her family history. While a young child, Buie and her siblings were placed in foster care. As an outlet for self-expression and to cope with a challenging environment, she embraced the world of art. Photographs, memorabilia, and documents are sourced from Buie’s family members to revive stories from her past.

Buie maintains a connection to her community by hosting printmaking workshops and demonstrations, as well as participating in Healthy Neighborhood Initiatives through public art created for underserved neighborhoods in Milwaukee and Madison, WI.

She has been a visiting artist lecturer in Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Rhode Island, and Arizona while continuing to exhibit her works in numerous juried, groups and solo exhibitions throughout the country.

Buie’s extensive exhibition record includes: The Contemporary Invitational Print and Drawing Exhibition at The University of Hawaii at Hilo, the Haggerty Museum of Art, Racine Art Museum, the Red Bull House of Art, N’NAMDI Center for Contemporary Art, Detroit Artist Market, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Lawrence University, and the Museum of Wisconsin Art.

In 2015, Buie received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant and was an artist in residence at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. She was a studio resident in silkscreen at the Women’s Studio Workshop, and an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center.

Buie earned an MFA from the prestigious printmaking program at The University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The UAH Art, Art History & Design Department, and the Distinguished Speaker Series are co-sponsors for Buie’s visit to campus and public lecture.
