The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) will celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Thursday, Jan. 17.

The day of observance will feature a concert by the Tuskegee Golden Voices Choir at 4 p.m. in the UAH Conference Training Center Exhibit Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. At 7:30 p.m. the Constellation Concert Series at UAH presents “Visionaries: The Legacy of Black Americans in Song,” featuring baritone James Martin, and pianist Lynn Raley will explore the influence of composers and poets from the Harlem Renaissance and share songs fueled by the Civil Rights Movement and contemporary activism. The program includes tributes to the music of Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday. The event will be held in the UAH Roberts Recital Hall (View Map). For tickets, please visit: eventbrite.com.

Martin Luther King, Jr. day events at UAH are co-sponsored by UAH Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and the UAH Department Of Music.

Martin Luther King Jr. day marks King’s birthdate, which was Jan. 15, 1929. President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a U.S. federal holiday honoring King in 1983. The holiday was first celebrated three years later.
