Admission Requirements
    • 2.7 GPA for previous college-level work or at least a 3.0 GPA in all coursework in an English major or minor
    • A brief statement of purpose (not to exceed 1000 words).
    • If you do not meet our requirements, you may still be granted conditional admission. This means that you can take classes, but that you must have the approval and signature of the Director of English Graduate Studies or the Chair of the English Department. You will also be required to earn at least a “B” in each of your courses. After having done satisfactory work for 12 hours (four courses) your admission status automatically changes to unconditional. From that point, you are required to maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
Financial Support for English Graduate Students

In addition to financial aid support offered to graduate students broadly at UAH, the English Department offers competitive Graduate Teaching Assistantships as well as two competitive tuition scholarships.

  • Tuition scholarships will cover all or part of your tuition for an academic year.
  • Graduate Teaching Assistantships cover tuition and pay a stipend each semester. Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) are given extensive training by department faculty and afforded significant classroom experience. Duties include teaching one or more writing studio sections (EH 101S) each semester, and working as a tutor in the Student Success Center. Experienced GTAs will teach First-Year Writing courses (EH 101 and EH 102) as teachers of record. GTAs may not hold other paid employment during the time of the appointments and must be full-time students (9 hours per semester) and work approximately 20 hours a week.

To apply for scholarships and assistantships in English, please download or pick up an application in the Department and return it by March 1 for the following Fall semester.
