Dr. Larry Carey

After serving as interim chair for a year, Dr. Larry Carey has been appointed to a full four-year term as chairman of The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Atmospheric Science Department.

"After a yearlong search for a chair, the faculty have unanimously recommended Dr. Carey as ATS chair," says Dr. Sundar Christopher, dean of UAH's College of Science. "I fully agree with this recommendation. Having served as interim chair for a year, he provides the department the leadership skills to lead a top 10 department to the next levels of excellence."

"It's a vote of confidence, and I appreciate that," says Carey. He says one of his goals as chair is to grow all of the department's academic programs.

"There is a lot of potential for growing the GIS (geographic information system) and remote sensing aspects of the program," Carey says. "GIS is becoming a very popular tool in the Earth sciences, and I see new opportunities for us to combine GIS and meteorology.

"We are uniquely set up to serve that need, and I feel like we should be on the front edge of that."
