Nurse practitioners function as care providers, case managers, researchers, consultants, and educators. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) are advanced practice nurses who are clinicians focused on managing mental health conditions for patients across the lifespan. PMHNPs review medical and psychiatric histories, perform comprehensive psychiatric exams, order diagnostic tests, diagnose using the DSM and clinical judgement, and develop individualized treatment plans to promote healing and prevention. PMHNPs practice in a variety of settings, such as private practice, community health, health care systems, and universities. PMHNPs can practice independently or collaborate with a physician, depending on their state’s practice laws. Through rigorous coursework, hands-on clinical experiences, and interprofessional collaboration, you will develop the skills necessary to diagnose, treat, and support individuals across the lifespan. Prior psychiatry experience is recommended. GRE scores are not required, though candidate interviews may be part of the admissions process. Licensure State Contacts Authorized States NC-SARA Clinical Hour Requirements To meet program requirements, you must complete 720 clinical hours, including a minimum of 600 direct patient care hours with a physician or nurse practitioner. These hours should cover psychiatric care across the lifespan. The remaining hours may include clinical seminars, pre-approved continuing education, simulations, or specialty rotations approved by the Nurse Practitioner Coordinator. Delivery Mode The PMHNP track is a hybrid program with on-campus and online components. Classes typically meet every other Wednesday except where noted.
