What is the Gulf Scholars Program (GSP)?

The GSP is a certificate program offered jointly by The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and Calhoun Community College (CCC). It equips undergraduate students to become change agents focused on solving challenges related to sustainability, safety, resilience, and environmental justice in the Gulf of Mexico region.

Who Can Apply?

The program is open to students from all majors. We welcome individuals who are passionate about driving meaningful change in their communities. Whether you're interested in science, engineering, nursing, business, the arts, or the humanities, the program offers a transformative experience grounded in academic excellence, community engagement, and real-world impact.

Will I receive financial support?

Yes, eligible students will receive tuition support for the 12 credit hours required for the certificate only if enrollment in the certificate courses results in an increase in tuition under the university’s block tuition policy. Tuition support is provided through funding from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and applies to tuition charges only; college and course-related fees are not covered. In addition, students will receive $1,000 to support their Gulf Impact Project. Additional funding is available for travel, conference participation, and student awards.

How long does the program take to complete?

Students can complete the program in two years, taking one GSP course per semester.

Is there a time limit to completing the program?

No. Students can complete the certificate program at their own pace.

How will this help my career or academic goals?

The GSP provides:

  • A certificate credential on your transcript
  • Interdisciplinary training and hands-on experience in research, community engagement, and project design
  • Skills in leadership, public speaking, cultural competence, and systems thinking

Can I complete the program at Calhoun?
